Northern lights

Just some icicles, haha

Hey Everyone,
Sorry my emails haven't been the best lately. I’ve gotten super busy here in Flin Flon and kinda lazy with emailing. It’s not you, its me... haha
I loved seeing you all at christmas. Sorry I don't have too much time to email but things are going great. My brother Wally Dumas gave a talk this Sunday! He was the 1st first nation male convert to ever give a talk in sacrament in Flin Flon! Satan was working really hard on him on Saturday night and he asked us to help get him out of a party late Saturday night, so we went to the rescue and helped him overcome the adversary. It’s been really cold, the norther lights have been decent lately. I realized I haven’t ever sent you guys pics of them.

I love Flin Flon. I’m working hard and having crazy experiences, and I’m loving every minute of it. My mission is going by fast. I’ve had a completely different experience than I thought I would have, but I wouldn’t trade any minute of it. I love being a missionary and everything that comes with it. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a good New Year’s celebration. I have to travel down to Winnipeg on the 1st and go all over my zone till the 5th, giving meetings and such. I love you all

Hey Mom,

haha I didn’t open my Christmas box... because I didn’t get it.. lol hopefully it didn’t get lost in the mail or something. That would stink. I did have a package to open at the fireside though, I got some socks and treats from the Chapmans. They are awesome, it was really nice of them!

I’ve been having a pretty good week. Not too much has been happening. Just teaching and helping our people progress. It’s been a stressful week but it’s been really good. The drive to and from Winnipeg was miserable, 6 missionaries squished into a sliverado truck, no fun at all.

I have the skype all figured out and we're going to do it at a members place. I’m excited to see all you guys.

We had our branch Christmas party and that was really great. Santa even came, all the kids loved it.

Well I’m doing well and loving it here. I love this place so much!

Hey mom,

Well I’m glad the week went well and the trip to Oklahoma was fun! Sounds like life is hectic as usual haha. We had a super good week this week. We taught a lot of people and had some really

crazy experiences. Weekends in Flin Flon are usually crazy. It can definitely be frustrating seeing people I love fall into temptation time and time again but I have definitely learned that life is a long

process where we're continually trying to get better and rely on the atonement every day. I love this gospel. We've found 3 new investigators within the past 2 weeks. One of them is super excited to

meet with us. She used to meet with missionaries and said she really misses it in her life. We set a baptism date with one of our investigators. She is doing everything except she lives with her

boyfriend so that will be a good lesson.. but we set the date for the 18th of january and hopefully we will be able to make the date. I’m getting along great with my companion. He likes to work

hard. its -40 here already and its only getting colder!! There’s only about 6-7 hours of daylight so its dark a lot. hah. Well good luck to the girls this week and all the other kids. Christmas is coming

soon! I wont be able to write next week probably because we will be traveling down to Winnipeg for the Christmas zone conference. I love you all

Hey Everyone

Sorry I don’t have lots of time to write today, we spent the day ice fishing for like 4 hours so that was my bad. I’ll send you some good pics tonight. I took some good ones. So sorry everyone for not being able to write you all this week.

Things are real busy here. I love serving with Elder Goodwin. Just being able to work hard and have a good time without babysitting! Finally!! It’s really nice. We had some crazy stuff happen to us on the reserve the other day. It was an adventure. I cant explain stuff that well over email so I cant wait to talk on Christmas! It’s comin fast!

One of our investigators walked to a members house pretty far away at midnight on saturday night to stay the night so that she could go to church on sunday. It was crazy! She is going to get baptized. I know it.

Things are going great here. We are famous with the lds famiily services in Alberta because we are getting an addictions recovery program going out here and we have been getting tons of phone calls from the head people in Alberta. We took the training and are going to get this thing going like crazy! I’m super excited.

Tell all the kids I love em, and miss them. oh I took all the Robinson kids sledding the other day. I’ll send pics and videos. love you all.

Hey Everyone,
So I don’t have too much time to email today. We're going ice fishing today in a bit. Its pretty cold up here already. It’s -27 btw! We had a bonfire in the middle of Amisk lake the other day. It was super sweet. We've been seeing miracles like crazy lately. Just people coming out of the blue who we're going to teach this week. Its great. It’s nice finally having a truck because now we can just do so much more than spending the whole day walking. My companion is great and we get along really well. He only has 3 months left on his mission so I’ll probably finish him off and stay here for a while longer. I’m seeing so much success here. We had 60 people at church on sunday! It was super crazy. We get beat up by kids every day. It’s so much fun being here, I love it. I’ll send pics to you later of us ice fishing and having the bonfire. I love you all sorry the email isn’t longer.

Oct. 27, 2014

Hey Everyone

We had a pretty good week this week. I really love it here. It snowed like 6 inches last night so that was pretty good. So today we went to help a friend get rid of her puppy cause her sons allergic to it eh? So we picked up the dog, I totally made her little daughter cry.. whoops... and we went to the spca but it was closed so we are stuck with a puppy until tomorrow. haha thats okay, good thing its cute.

Oh, we went to a haunted house with a bunch of kids this week. One of the lady’s who got baptized a little while ago asked us to walk all her kids to it so we ended up going through with them. I had two of the kids just clutching each of my legs for the whole time and the other 4 had to go out cause they got scared. It was pretty funny. Church yesterday was ridiculous. We had 4 investigators at sacrament and a bunch of less actives. It was great. There was like 20 kids there and it always just turns into a wwe wrestling match, so I just sit in the back and play peace keeper. The branch president started laughing cause at one point I had 4 kids on my lap and I was holding 2 in my arms to stop them from fighting. So he made an announcement to the parents to start bringing something for their kids to do during sacrament. good times.

We had a games night the other night. It was tons of fun. We had 38 people there! That’s more than church usually, except we told everyone that came that they had to come to church the next day so we had 60 people at church!! It was a miracle.

things are still going the same. Elder Olguin and I are trying to motivate our companions like always. Sometimes we just leave them together for a couple hours and just go and get crazy work done. I’m tired of playing  babysitter, but I guess it’s what I’m supposed to do.

I love teaching people the basics of the gospel. All the small important things. The gospel isn’t complicated. It just takes a bit of work and it is definitely a process.

I love you all, and love the pics.

10-20-2014

Hey Everyone,

Well we made it back from the meeting in Winnipeg. It was miserable haha. Both nights we slept on the floor with no blankets or pillows so it felt like we all got hit by a bus haha. But it was okay. We had a good meeting. Then I drove the 6 and a half hours from Winnipeg to the Ponton Junction. No cops are ever on that road so I went 160 km for 5 hours straight. It was nice. We got back a lot faster haha.

We have been working with our friend Wally who has been less active, and this coming Sunday, he will be getting the priesthood! It’s been really great to see his change of heart. He called the missionary who baptized him (Jake Hendy), who is a legend up here, cause he baptized the whole town 14 years ago) and Jake called me and just freaked out cause he couldn’t believe Wally was getting the priesthood. It turns out Jake remembers me from Selkirk and he remembers feeling that I needed to be in Flin Flon and it stunk that I was in Selkirk. So he couldn’t believe I am actually up here.

Things with Elder Olguins comp are not the best. He is racist and super abrasive and everyone up here literally hates him. All of Elder Olguins investigators have come up to me telling me to switch companions, and I was just like, sorry I cant... its sad to see.

So like an hour ago Elder Olguin and I went off roading and found this crazy off road trail. We came up on this weird pipeline with these big wooden doors in the middle of no where and we went exploring. It was so cool! We found an old abandoned crashed car and some other crazy stuff. It was a fun p-day!!

Things are going well. I love it here and never want to leave. Love you all!!!

Oct  13, 2014

Hi Everyone,
It looks like the Grand Canyon hike went well. I'm pretty jealous, it sure looked like fun. haha lookin good with the braces Syd. I bet they hurt.
So this week was absolutely amazing. Things up here are really crazy. It is literally a whole different culture up here. It's sad to see a lot of it. a lot of these kids up here just run around all day and do bad things. like we work with some people who's 8 year old daughter smokes and drinks. its so sad, but I'm glad I'm able to be a part of helping others change their lives.
We had some great things happen to us this week. so we've been spending a lot of time this week with a less active member named Wally Dumas. Everyone up here is a Dumas ( we have this joke whenever we talk to him, we tell him to stop being such a Dumas) but anyways, we've gone fishing with him a lot this week and every time we go fishing with him we teach him a lesson. So we we're teaching him about the priesthood because we want him to baptize his cousin Noella (ill get to her later). He was just like, heck no bro. things are really strict and I don't want to have anything to do with it. So we talked a while and he started asking about what he needs to do to get the priesthood, so we went over word of wisdom, chastity, commandments, all that jazz, and he was just like, that's it? He started to talk to us about how he really wants to do better. So we spent the whole week with him, not all day but we saw him everyday, and he told us, that it was getting easier to say no to all the bad things his family and friends wanted him to do. He came to church Sunday and even gave up moose hunting to be there. Then he set up an appointment with the branch president right after church and they talked about some things he needed to do and he is really on track! It is so great. We're going fishing with him again today. I'm excited.
So his cousin Noella Caribou has been investigating for a while and told me she really wants to get baptized, but just has to quit smoking. She says its hard cause she's been doing it since she was 10. but she's starting this program to help her get off and I made it a competition between her and Wally to see who can quit the longest. She has quite the story. A month or so ago, she jumped off a 5 story roof and shattered her leg and compressed her back, she was drunk and tried to commit suicide. But we've been working with her and she is doing so well. She even came to church this past week.
So I'm going to get so fat up here. I've literally eaten bannock (fry bread) and fried fish 12 times this week. It's crazy. whatever. It's all good.
I just remembered another crazy story from last week. so we were stopping by Wally's sisters place (everyone up here is related. its crazy) anyways, we walk up to the door and there is bloody handprint smeared on the door. So we're like what the? It turns out the night before some of her cousins broke in and attacked her boyfriend Jeremiah, and just about killed him. It was brutal, so this week we went over and helped him move some furniture, and he was pretty messed up. The inside of the apartment was a battle scene. The guys got caught and they are in jail for like 12 years or something. but he was talking to us for a bit. He still doesn't know why the heck they attacked him.
I never thought on my mission I would be following around a native guy through the bush, up and down rocks and cliffs to find a monster fishing spot and catch some monster fish. I never thought I would be doing all the amazing stuff we do here either. I love this place so much. It's beautiful here and the people are the best. It's a totally different world up here. We get to have bonfires with investigators and do all sorts of stuff that the missionaries in the city don't get to. It's great.
Well this week were going to Winnipeg on Thursday. The car ride is going to stink, but we will make it fun.
love you all

Oct 6, 2014

Hey Everyone,
Flin  Flon is the greatest place in the world. I love it here so freakin much!! It’s away from everyone and all the mission drama. No sisters up here haha we have a blast and we work hard. We even got to go to a Flin Flon bombers game with some investigators and kids. It was so much fun. In Flin Flon all the kids here just run around wild and they all know us so when we walk down the street we end up walking with a bunch of kids surrounding us. It’s really cool, and since everyone is related we just end up teaching everyones family. It’s great.

So the bus ride up here was so ridiculous. Our bus left at 8 pm and we got there at about 745, and had to get our bags checked. So they ended up being too heavy so we had to go down and ship them by freight. so that happened. We sent the Elders who dropped Elder Glissmeyer and I off to send our bags off. So we went through security and were sitting on the bus. We felt like we should just go and check to see if our bags were good to go, so we went with a security guard and the other elders had our bags on a rack to send to Vancouver B.C. so they almost got shipped a few provinces over. so that stunk. We barely got them on the bus, and we delayed the bus like 20 minutes. Anyways, the bus driver played mail man all night dropping mail and packages off in every podunk town along the way, so what was supposed to be a 12 hour bus ride turned into a 15 and a half hour bus ride. It was fun though. Very beautiful when the sun came up.

So it is already snowing up here. its -4 and snow is on the ground. We're going fishing today so that should be super fun.

I loved conference. I loved all the talks that just talked about straight simple doctrine, especially the ones about Jesus Christ. We had 4 investigators at sacrament and it was great. What a good experience.

So I’m in another walking area. It’s all good, I love being out in the community. ugh I’m going to get so fat eating all this bannock (fry bread). Anyways I love you all!

Hey Everyone,

It sure sounds like mom and the girls all had a bunch of fun going to Utah to the women’s broadcast! I have that long of a bus ride up to Flin Flon. I found out it is about 13 hours with a couple stops. its going to be nuts. I cant believe it is actually happening!!! I don’t get to be companions with Elder Olguin, but we will be staying in the same apartment, so it’s almsot as good!! I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures up there. Did you look it up on google earth?? It is a beautiful place. It is a rougher place, but it will be great.

A lot happened this week, but it was really just the same old stuff. There was a ton of crime going on this week downtown and somehow I always end up involved in it. I don’t feel like writing out the stories, but I stayed safe, you all know I can handle my own haha.

I leave on Thursday to Flin Flon though. I think I will be traveling over night and get there closer to 4 am or something stupid like that haha. I got to bear my testimony this week, and a lot of people invited us to dinner. We haven’t had this many dinner appointments, ever! It’s crazy. I’m gonna miss this place, but it is the perfect time to go.

Thanks for everything! I sure love you all!

Hey Everyone,

So this week was great! We went into Winnipeg for a training and Elder Olguin stayed with me. We made our comps go together and we went and visited Rosemary! She is the best. It was really nice to go and see her together, just like old times. Elder Olguin and I have been requesting to serve together again and President Thomas said he is going to pray about it and we have both been praying and fasting. I think its going to happen.

So I had to teach sharing time this week as well. haha I did it on the Holy Ghost, we played the telephone game and simon says, it was out of control but turned out good in the end. It was super cute, all the latino kids love me. During singing time I had one kid on my shoulders and another little girl sitting on my right knee. it was super funny cause she was just like "your my bro, will you sit by me at the potluck?" it was a fun day!

I had to call the cops a couple times this week. It was definitely an interesting one.

We sang at church this week. The Bishops wife thinks we're super stars and makes us sing in sacrament like twice a month. It’s kinda ridiculous.

We taught some less actives this week and one of the guys we are working with is finally getting married! It will be so good.

We are working hard, time is going by really fast. I’m loving it. Love you all

9-15-2014

Hey Everyone,

This week was good. We had some good lessons and service opportunities. I was called on to be a body guard at the soup kitchen and guard the door cause there were so many people just stealing the trays and plates, so I had to stand at the door and rough some people up. haha

So we got a referral from an investigator that we found a while back. They asked us to go and visit their brother. So we got the address and went to the place. So we past by this tent of really drunk guys who just yelled at us, and it was apartment number three, so the only other door I saw was the one up on the fire escape. So I climbed it, it was super sketchy and a couple of the steps broke, but I needed to knock on the door, haha so I knocked on the door and this chick comes out and dry heaved right in my face. It was sick!! I thought she was going to throw up on me. Long story short, they wondered why the heck I climbed the fire escape. So we went through the front and taught them a bit about prayer, but the husband hated mormons and didn’t want us to be there so we just prayed with them and left. fun stuff haha.

We played croquet this week for mutual. It was super fun.

We get to go into Winnipeg tonight for a special training meeting and Elder Olguin is coming down from Flin Flon and we're going to stay together tonight. So pretty much we're not going to sleep at all really. I’m really excited about it.

Anyways, things are going good. I didnt take any pics this week so sorry. haha not too many exciting things.

Love you all

Sept 8, 2014
Hey Everyone!

Things are great! I’m having a really good time here in Brandon. For my year mark I burned a shirt on my porch, and made some homemade tortillas haha. Things are just still moving along and picking up speed. We've been having some good lessons lately and seeing people progress. oh funny story... so we were sitting by our investigator David, (the albino nigerian) and during fast and testimony meeting he just looks at us and says, "can i go up now?" I was just like what.... haha cause he says some pretty ridiculous things, so he just walks up to the front and starts bearing testimony on Elder Ferrolino and I, how all that we are teaching him is making him like life a lot more and that he is grateful he is still alive. I was so anxious the whole time that he was just going to go on a huge rant about some political issue (he does that all the time) and that I would have to go up and take him off the podium, but it turned out fine and it was really good. We are going to have to move his baptism date to a later time because lessons take forever with him. It took us almost 3 hours to teach him the restoration cause he was just talking like a mad man. We have this game Elder Ferrolino and I play with him. We call it jui jitsu teaching. We use things that he says to bring the conversation back to the lesson, and keep it on track. It is a really tough way to teach but it’s working and he’s loving everything were teaching him. It’s a lot of fun.

I love the pics that all the kids sent me. Tell them thank you!

So I’ve had a lot of crazy experiences this past week that have made me really grateful to know our purpose for being here on this earth. I’ve come to know just how real lucifer is, and how big of an influence he can have on our lives if we let him. He has a lot of power in this world, we all just have to keep resisting.

We went on an exchange with one of presidents assistants this week, it was interesting. He really liked using his “leadership role” and trying to “boss” us around, it was really annoying! So the whole exchange I had to find things to do because he had a car and I’m so used to bussing, I had just planned things to do that would take all day on the bus, and with the car it took an hour. So I was pretty stressed trying to find stuff to do. haha we took him to a lesson with David and he didn’t say anything the whole time, and David was having a really bad day and yelled at him for just sitting there like an idiot and told him he needed to teach like Elder Porter and Ferrolino. It was honestly the funniest thing ever. So the next morning he asked what we had planned and I told him we were going to do some roofing, so we went to help our friend Patrick and I got all harnessed up, strapped myself on to the rope and said “adios,” and I was on the roof for 2 hours talking about the gospel with Patrick. I threw Elder Ferrolino under the bus cause he had to stay on the ground with him for 2 hours but that was fine. hahaha it was a lot of fun.... at least for me..

Well I cant believe a year has gone by. My testimony is so much stronger and I’m loving every minute of my mission. Well, at least most minutes haha. Love you all!!

Sept. 2, 2014

Hey Everyone!

Time is flying by pretty quick. I cant believe I’m already half there. It’s ridiculous. I honestly can’t believe it’s half over. I wish I knew at the beginning what I know now. I’m honestly excited about this next year. I know its going to go by so fast. I’ve definitely had some seriously hard times on my mission, but looking back I’m really glad I did. It’s easy to stay the same person you were before the mission if you just go through the motions. I’ve definitely grown up a ton this past year. There are still things I want to do better at and things to work on, but that will be my whole life. I’ve definitely loved being a missionary. I’ve come to understand that it’s not about the baptisms. It’s about how hard you work and how much you serve and what you do to help other people. I think we will have a baptism coming up this month and I really hope it all turns out well.

We had a real good week. We went out to a pow wow on the reserve all day on Saturday. It was crazy. It was huge!! There were tons of people there. I think Elder Nelson and I were the only white guys there! It was the best. I bought a beaded lanyard. It’s really nice.

We've still been helping our friend Patrick roof some houses. He’s starting to open up to us as we talk with him and we're able to mess around and have a lot of fun. I really enjoy doing the roofing. It’s a lot of fun.

My companion is good, but I have to kick him into gear or he will just sleep all day. I make him get up at 5:30 for the gym every day though. haha. We're doing pretty good. I love it here in Brandon so much!

So we're still teaching David, and he's been coming to church. We set a baptism date with him for the middle of the month, and we’re really praying it works out. We have to teach him quite a bit still, so we will see if we can make it happen.

Well I was sick as a dog this past week. I had a real nasty cold. I couldn't eat or sleep and I started to go crazy! I kept working, but on Wednesday it got to me and I almost passed out!! I could barely walk straight. Anyways, I didn't eat for about 3 days and lost like 13 pounds. I’m feeling a lot better now though, and I gained it all back a few days later. It was a real tough week but I’m just glad I’m good and healthy now.

We had a really fun ward tailgate party yesterday. I bbq'd some pork and we had a good time. We played soccer with all the latinos and had a lot of fun.

So lately we have been having these huge "dock spiders" around our patio. We have three of them and they are the size of a silver dollar, a little bigger. But anyways the zone leaders live right across the parking lot and every night we put a grasshopper or dragon fly in the web and watch them battle it out. Well we got this huge grasshopper, probably the biggest one I have ever seen, and my spider battled with it but ended up losing a leg. So it recovered and is back in action. So we caught a snake the other day, it’s pretty small but we're going to put it in the web tonight to see if they will battle. It’s pretty fun to watch. They have some crazy battles. haha

As district leader I am responsible for leading a meeting each week where I train them on how to better missionaries. I talk for like 45 min and then we practice doing stuff, like role playing different skills. I had a really spiritual district meeting today on testimony. It was really good. I think every one liked it. We read the talk by Pres. Uchtdorf about having a personal testimony. It was great!

It’s in the 60's and 70's now. The leaves are changing, falls about to set in. Winter will be here beginning of November! It’s rainy season, so we get these light prairie storms now and then few times a week. It’s nice!!

Things are going really good. I love being a missionary and I’m excited for this next year. I love you all!!

Elder Porter
We went to the Souri swinging bridge. I was sick as a dog that day, but still was cool!

After the pow wow, we went to this families animal rescue, it was so fun!!

August 25, 2014

Hey Everyone,

So this week was good. I drove into Winnipeg and dropped off Elder Hindes and picked up Elder Ferrolino. He’s a good guy, really funny and we're doing some good work together already. We had an interesting Sunday yesterday haha. We went to our friends 10th wedding anniversary party. They are Nigerian, so it was a huge social. They were dressed in there native clothing from Africa, and there were a ton of Nigerians there. Anyways so we ate a bunch of the food, and this one guy comes up to me, I think his name was Jomeodusuloa, or something crazy, we were just calling him JB. Anyways he tells us to get a bowl for their soup. So I’m like okay, and we all grabbed a bowl and he gives us this intestine soup with tons of liver and kidney and heart and just weird stuff in it. It was an adventure eating it for sure haha. It actually wasn’t that bad. I don’t have my camera with me right now but I have a picture with all of us that were at the party gathered together. It is a good picture. I’ll email it to you later. Other than that, we didn’t have too much happen this week. Just the normal stuff, taught some good lessons, and just hit the streets like every day. Oh we did go to a boxing gym with a recent convert, cause she was begging us to go with her, and the coach was pretty impressed with me, haha. I didn’t tell him that I used to box and do muay thai until the end haha. It was funny. He had to put me on his heaviest bag cause I was hitting too hard. It was fun.

Love you all!!

August 18, 2014

Hey Everyone!
Well this week was a good one. We had one of our investigators at church this week, David, the albino from nigeria. He loved it. He said that it was the best day of his life.

Well transfer calls came and I will be staying here in Brandon with an elder named Elder Ferrilino. He’s a good guy and we're going to have lots of fun together. I’m super excited to stay. There are some really good things coming up here in Brandon. I’m so excited.

We had some funny things happen this week. We were walking on the street, back to our apartment and I was on the phone with my former companion Elder Olguin, and we were about to make a 3 way call to our best friend in Winnipeg, and this lady walked past us with her dogs, and right as they walked by, this bird hopped in front of the dog and the dog grabbed it, and killed it! The lady was screaming, and I just couldn’t stop laughing. It was honestly the funniest thing I saw this week.

We built a $125,000 playground this week with the city. It was so fun and we got to meet a ton of new people. We did lots of service this week. We continued to help re-roof the house. It was fun.

Oh we sang a musical number in church yesterday. The ward liked it so much that we have to do another one next week, orders from bishop! I was never much of a singer, but I guess I’ll do it. It was pretty fun.

So on Thursday, I get to take the sisters car to Winnipeg for transfers and leave them walking all day hahaha. It’s going to be so much fun to tell them hahaa.

Other than than, not too much has happened. We're working hard, I’m loving serving the Lord, and I know the church is true. I’m almost at a year. It’s flying by. I love you all!
